  • Around the history and culture of Amakusa

    • Misumi West Port

      As one of The Three Major Ports of the Meiji Era, it was constructed based on the Meiji government's policies of national unification and industrial promotion.
      The port was built between 1884 and 1887, based on a design by the Dutch hydraulic engineer Mulder.
      A comprehensive city plan with 730m long masonry piers and floating piers, as well as well-organized roads and drainage canals has been made and protected as a valuable cultural property.
      It is also comfortable to take a walk while looking at the retro building, cobblestones and the sea from there.

    • Sakitsu Cathedral Church and Sakitsu Village

      This church stands on the coast of Sakitsu, overlooking the calm Yokaku Bay.
      In 1569, Father Luis de Almeida spread Christianity to the area and began missionary work.
      The current building was renovated in 1934 by Father Halbout, and is a stately Gothic structure with a high spire, and the interior is covered with tatami mats.

    • Shiro Amakusa Memorial Hall

      This is a historical museum themed around the Battle of Amakusa and Shimabara.
      It introduces Shiro Amakusa's upbringing and the history of Christian martyrdom.
      The facility displays materials that allow visitors to learn about the Battle of Amakusa Shimabara through hands-on experience, including a replica of a Nanban ship and a diorama that recreates the rebellion.
      Hotel Matsuryuen Kaisei is located on land adjacent to Amakusa Shiro Park.

    • Amakusa Shiro Park

      The area around the memorial hall is a park, with tropical plants and seasonal flowers and sidewalks.
      The bronze statue of Shiro Amakusa stands tall at the top of the garden, and is surrounded by Shiro gravestone and the gravestones of other hidden Christians.
      The park also has a "Love Call Bell, " which is said to be a bell that, when you ring it facing Ariake Sea while thinking of your loved one, your feelings will be carried to the other person by the sea breeze.

      It is a museum where about 150 items such as hidden Christian materials and relics are collected.
      Cut statues, a wide variety of rosaries, etc. are on display.

    • Five Bridges of Amakusa/Pearl Line

      Opened in September 1966, this is a series of five bridges spanning 12km connecting Kyushu mainland and Amakusa.
      It is affectionately known as the "Amakusa Pearl Line."
      It consists of Bridge No. 1 (Temmon Bridge), Bridge No. 2 (Oyano Bridge), Bridge No. 3 (Nakanobashi Bridge), Bridge No. 4 (Maejima Bridge), and Bridge No. 5 (Matsushima Bridge).
      It is now a standard tourist attraction and a popular drive route.
